WARNING: Don’t Try to Improve Your Vocabulary Until You Read This

When most people consider improving their vocabulary, they immediately think about reading dictionaries and memorizing words from them.

In fact, picking random words from a dictionary to memorize is one of the worst ways to build your vocabulary! As humans, our brains are naturally wired to ignore information that doesn’t seem to be relevant to us.

This is a very good thing – our brains are constantly being bombarded from all sides with sights, sounds and smells – if we paid attention to everything that was going on our brains would sizzle and burn out from information overload.

In fact, recent research suggests that how good we are at ignoring irrelevant information is linked to how smart we are (Vogel, University of Oregon, 2005).

When it comes to building your vocabulary and learning words that can help you succeed, you can turn this characteristic of the human brain to your advantage. And the best news is that doing this will make building your vocabulary fun and interesting instead of a chore.

This approach is simple and easy when you know how. The secret is in making the new words you are learning very relevant and interesting to your brain, as soon as you encounter them.

This method of building your vocabulary can be as simple as 1, 2, 3.

  1. Keep on the look out for useful new words. You might start reading a new magazine that you enjoy, or ask a friend to recommend some enjoyable novels.

  2. When you find a word that you don’t understand, try to guess its meaning from the context of the sentence. If you can, look it up immediately to see if you were right. Make a note in a handy notepad of the word and its meaning

  3. As soon as you understand the word, you can now use your brain to hugely increase your chances of remembering it by simply making the word personal and relevant. How do you do this? Just think of something in your life that you could use this word about. Does your husband get “apoplectic” if he gets disturbed when reading the Sunday papers? Or has your child been “malingering” recently in order to get a “sick” day off school?

The more personal you can make a word, and the more you can use your imagination to bring the word to life, the more quickly and easily you will learn it!

Whether you use traditional pen and paper methods or investigate some of the excellent software packages available for building your vocabulary, remember to make your new words your own by personalizing them and using your imagination, and you will successfully build your vocabulary.
