Seven Mistakes You Must Avoid When Improving Your Vocabulary

Vocabulary building is a much-misunderstood process. If you wish to build a powerful vocabulary with the minimum amount of effort and the most fun possible, you should ensure that you avoid these common mistakes.

Common Vocabulary Mistake #1 – Irrelevant lists of words

Probably the commonest mistake people make when trying to increase their vocabulary is trying to learn too many words at once – and cramming those words into a boring list.

Your brain will baulk at this method of learning and will very efficiently discard the information – because you have not made it relevant. So always find a reason for learning your new word, and as soon as you learn it be sure to use it in your speech, writing and imagination to bring the new word to life for you. Then your brain will happily remember it!

Common Vocabulary Mistake #2 – Skipping unfamiliar words

Young children are intensely curious about new words – which is one of the reasons they are so great at learning their native language at a young age, as well as having the ability to pick up foreign languages quickly and easily if they are exposed to them.

Children naturally guess at the meaning of a new word that they come across in either conversation or reading, by the context. However, they are also certainly not shy to ask for confirmation of their “guesses”.

As adults, we have much more of a tendency to skip over words we don’t know. Instead, you need to be on the lookout for those words and focus on them. Guess their meaning, then look them up.

Common Vocabulary Mistake #3 – Being afraid to ask

Do you worry that if you ask a colleague to explain a word they’ve just used in conversation, you’ll look stupid? And so you don’t ask and then forget to look the word up?

In fact it is the blank looks and misunderstandings that really can make someone look silly.

The truth is, your colleagues will respect your honesty and interest when you ask them to explain a new word to you. People love to be able to show off their knowledge and if you ask confidently and unashamedly you will look good, not bad!

Common Vocabulary Mistake #4 – Not reading

Not reading is a sure fire way to limit your vocabulary. You don’t need to push yourself into reading vast amounts of boring material – but you should make the effort to find what reading material will interest and excite you.

Common Vocabulary Mistake #5 – Not capitalizing on roots, suffixes and prefixes

You can give your vocabulary a huge boost by learning common roots, suffixes and prefixes. If you are not bothering with this you are missing out on a real short cut to a powerful vocabulary.

Common Vocabulary Mistake #6 – Not knowing your learning style

Do you know whether you tend to remember things better if you see them? Or if you hear them? Your personal learning style is a key element of building your vocabulary, so you should spend a little time figuring out how you most enjoy learning.

Common Vocabulary Mistake #7 - Ignoring valuable resources

As you get more familiar with your own personal learning style, look around for some of the new tools and resources that are available to help you build your vocabulary, and take full advantage of them!
